THE INSPIRATION

Welcome to Lure of the Horizon. My inspiration goes back to the 1980s. I grew up playing sports, riding my bike, exploring the neighborhood, and camping. These were my Midwest adventures. There was no ocean, towering mountain range, or dramatic horizon stretching beyond my hometown. Adventure was relatively close to home and, at least in my young mind, the world felt pretty small. But a few family vacations planted a seed. Every few years, the six of us would pile into the family car and head out toward somewhere different. Colorado, Texas, Florida. Those trips exposed me to landscapes that were completely foreign to me. Mountains, beaches, ocean waves, unfamiliar cities, and wide-open spaces. I was mesmerized by the sheer diversity of the world. More importantly, I began to wonder what else was out there.

In 1998, my world changed because of a relatively simple trip. The destination was San Juan, Puerto Rico. A lifelong friend and I were traveling to visit another friend who lived there. It wasn't an extravagant expedition or some grand adventure. It was simply my first trip as an adult. But something happened in the airport that I still remember. As I stood looking at the departure board, I suddenly realized that those destinations weren't just names on a screen. They were places I could actually visit. The world that had seemed so distant was suddenly accessible. The possibilities seemed limitless.

Over the recent years, some of my adventures have been physically demanding. Others have simply put me somewhere unfamiliar and forced me to slow down, look around, and experience something new. I've learned that adventure doesn't necessarily require traveling to the other side of the world. Sometimes it's found at a new spot in your hometown, down a trail you've never walked, on a river you've never paddled, or in a town you've driven past a hundred times without stopping. What drives me isn’t simply travel. It’s the experience, the curiosity, the anticipation, and the feeling that something lies just beyond. Lure of the Horizon is more than a phrase. It’s a philosophy. It's a feeling. It’s for explorers, adventurers, travelers, and anyone who feels that pull toward trying something new. A community connected by the simple curiosity of wondering what else is out there? We invite you to join us, follow the feeling, and seek out new experiences. Wherever it leads, stay curious and follow the Lure of the Horizon.
